Phillip J. "Phil" Coulson was a Director of SHIELD, before that one of its best agents, Director Nick Fury’s right-hand man for many important missions, and the primary operative of the Avengers Initiative. Coulson was killed by Loki shortly before the Battle of New York. His death gave the Avengers the push they needed to band together and stop Loki and the Chitauri.
